Sweet Land, which received the 2021 MCANA Award for Best New Opera, was produced by Yuval Sharon’s experimental company The Industry. The site-specific work premiered in February 2020 in Los AngelesStateHistoricPark, but its run was cut short by the pandemic in March. After the lockdown, the company made an evocative film, which is available for viewing by MCANA members on our website mcana.org from Sept. 8 through Sept. 14. The opera’s story is told from two perspectives, called “Train” and “Feast."
Sweet Land and its creators are being honored during MCANA’s annual meeting Sept. 10-12 in Detroit, held in conjunction with Michigan Opera Theatre, whose new artistic director is Sharon. During the meeting, MOT is giving the 2020 Best New Opera winner, Blue, its first staging since it premiered at the Glimmerglass Festival in 2019..
