Dear MCANA Colleague,
I hope you are planning to make the 2020 MCANA annual meeting in San Francisco part of your summer. Enclosed is the registration form for the meeting, including press ticket requests for performances June 19-21 by our hosts, the San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Symphony.
The lineup has Michael Tilson Thomas’ penultimate program after 25 years as SFS music director (Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, the Barber violin concerto with Gil Shaham as soloist, and Corigliano’s Three Hallucinations), as well as SFO productions of Verdi’s Ernani and Handel’s Partenope. At the opera, members would have the option of taking in Mason Bates’ The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, whose premiere was the centerpiece of our 2017 annual meeting in Santa Fe.
Note that in a change announced in January SFO music director designate Eun Sun Kim is conducting Ernani. Receptions are scheduled Friday at the War Memorial Opera House (during which I expect the 2020 MCANA Award for Best New Opera to be presented) and Saturday before the orchestra’s concert at Davies Hall.
Along with performances, our get-together will feature panel discussions on matters musical and journalistic, as well as the annual business meeting, in space provided by our third collaborator, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Details to follow.
MCANA has a block of rooms on hold at the nicely remodeled Holiday Inn Golden Gateway, which is conveniently located on Van Ness about a 20-minute walk from the opera, symphony, and conservatory. Access to our group rate of $209 per night will be provided upon registration.
Until we meet in San Francisco,
John Fleming, President
